Title
Anderson and Ireland Hardware Store Is Protected
Photographer
Unknown
Description
By 5 a.m. Monday morning, a 30 mile per hour wind from the northwest had driven the fire to the
harbor. Firefighters tried in vain to save the piers along Pratt Street. Located near Pratt and
Charles Street was the Anderson and Ireland Hardware Store. Here were stored large amounts of gunpowder.
Firemen stayed with the building, pouring water on it until the fire went out later that day. Because the temperature was near 20 degrees, the building and power lines all froze when water was sprayed on them.
